misty cliffs, cape town

A house designed in response to the magnificent, often harsh, natural context.   Spaces step up the steep slope, protected from the winds by a curving stone wall and opening up to the sun and views over the ocean on the leeward side – the curves of the stone wall representing the mountains and the ripple of the balustrade the waves of the ocean.  Colours and materials blend into the fyn-bos biosphere, the whole house often disappearing in early morning mist, invisible from the road below.  High level windows capture views of the mountain hovering above – all adding to the allure of an escape to the elements.
